Student Lab Printing

UMSL has implemented a system that will manage student use of lab printers.  Any currently registered student receives a set dollar amount instead of a page quota per semester to use for course work. A mechanism is also available enabling students to provide funding to a personal account if they need more printing resources.

Faculty, Staff, and Student employee Printing

UMSL has implemented a managed print services program for academic and administrative units located on the main campus. This program is managed by  UMSL Printing Services in cooperation with Information Technology Services. This program provides staff with a variety of print options and creates cost certainty for budget managers. Pharos software is being used to capture and manage print charges.


How Your Print is Charged

Student Lab Printing 

One week prior to a new semester, all students with paid enrollment fees for that semester will receive a balance of $15.00 to be used for printing. This amount is based on the current lab print quota of 500 black & white impressions at a rate of $0.03 per impression, or 150 color impressions.  [An impression is considered any amount of ink printed on one side of one piece of paper.]  Instead of tracking by pages, printing will be tracked by dollars as it is done in the departments. Once the semester is over the balance is zeroed out in preparation for the next semester. Quotas do not roll over to future semesters.

For students that exhaust the quota, you can establish a MoCode with funds that you have charged to your personal credit card.

When adding credit to your Personal Printing account, please be aware that the credit added to your Personal Printing account (SCRDT) is non-refundable and stays available for use until you are no longer active or eligible as a student. Eligibility is until you are not enrolled in a course for three consecutive terms. More information about refunds for student printing.

Faculty, Staff, and Student employee Printing

Printing is charged per printed page. The cost for color print is significantly more than black and white. Any color content on a page triggers the charge for a color page. The charge is per imprint on a page, so if you are printing in duplex mode, the cost is per side of the page. If one side of a two-sided page has color on it and the other side is black ink only, the charge will be for one color page and one black and white page. If your file has color test or images, but you select to print as black/white, then your document will print with black ink only and charged the black/white cost per page. Supplies and paper are included in the per page charge. The campus will pay Xerox centrally and bill campus departments individually.

Printing Options

Student Lab Printing Direct Print

With direct printing, you select the device you want to use by choosing the appropriate print queue (i.e. ESH-444-CQ8870). Direct print queue names will be in the format bldg-room-model).  You will have to provide your SSO ID and password and choose a MoCode so that the print is charged back to your department correctly.

Faculty, Staff, and Student employee Printing

Two printing options are available. The printer/queue that you select when you print will determine if you are printing directly to a specific device, or if you are sending your print to a queue where it is held until you release it on a secure release enabled device.

Direct Print

With direct printing, you select the device you want to use by choosing the appropriate print queue (i.e.  ESH-444-CQ8870). Direct print queue names will be in the format bldg-room-model).  You will have to provide your SSO ID and password and choose a MoCode so that the print is charged back to your department correctly. 

Secure Release

This printing option uses one print queue, named "Secure Print Queue." When you choose the Secure Print Queue, your job is stored and does not print until you go to a secure release device, scan your UMSL ID card and release your print job. You can release your print on ANY secure release device on campus. All Xerox multi-function devices have secure release effective Fall 2020. When you release the job, you select your MoCode so that the print is charged back to your department correctly. The secure release option allows you to print files from your mobile device. You can view your queued jobs at the device or through an online application. You can also view your print transactions and cost history with the MyTritonPrint application.

You can login and release your print jobs by pressing Alternate Login at the top right corner of the display panel.  If the panel is blank, press the physical green Start button (or the physical Energy Saver button on some models) to wake up the printer.  Type your Username (SSO ID) press Enter (top right of panel), then type your Password and press Enter.
When you enter your ID and/or password incorrectly, you receive the message “An internal server error occurred. Your username and password combination could not be verified. Please contact the system administrator.”  “Do you want to continue?”  Select the Exit option and you receive “Are you sure you want to exit the authentication process?” Select Confirm.  You will need to start the login process again by pressing Alternate Login.
You can scan your card in any direction: Top to bottom, or bottom to top, with either side of the card facing in either direction.

This message indicates that a personal account is selected for the cost center (this is the default).  You must select a MoCode to charge the print cost to your department.  Select a MoCode by pressing the Account button on the Print Release screen, or use the Pharos Account button on the initial printer panel display to select a MoCode and then click the Print Release button.

Print jobs expire from the queue after 24 hours.  Expired print jobs will show as “Deleted Print” in a transaction history report. You can view print/scan/fax reports from the Printer Transaction Application.
If the light on the card scanner blinks red instead of green when you scan your card please be sure you are scanning your card with the magnetic strip facing down (ID card will be upside down).  Try scanning your card in both directions in the reader, top to bottom and bottom to top.  If you still get a red light, you probably need to replace your ID card.  Some cards are too old or the magnetic strip is too worn to work correctly with the device.  If a faculty or staff member would like to replace their ID card, please go to the Technology Support Center located in 190 Millennium Student Center.   There is no charge to faculty or staff to make or replace ID cards.  It is helpful to bring an old ID, another form of ID or your employee number.
