Facilities

 

Offices

Faculty offices are located in the College of Nursing building and in Seton Hall. All full-time faculty members have individual offices equipped with desk, chairs, telephone, file cabinet and bookcase and are equipped with basic office supply support. Part-time faculty members share office space with the assurance that space for individual conferences is available as needed. Additional and/or replacement supplies are to be obtained through the Faculty Administrative Assistant. Faculty members participate in the University's Desktop Plan which provides a personal computer in each office and are upgraded regularly. Keys are provided for individual offices upon employment. Further details are provided in the office policy that follows.

Building Access

Access to the building is keyless and requires a valid faculty ID to enter during non-business hours. The main floor exterior doors are unlocked during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 7:30 - 5:00). Handicapped access is also available during normal business hours via the lower level rear entrance and the front entrance on the south side of the building. Faculty members who leave at times other than normal business hours are responsible for assuring the building is secured before leaving. It is important to check that all exterior doors are fully engaged before leaving the area.

Seton Hall also has keyless entry and requires a valid faculty ID to access if locked. Doors are open Monday - Friday, 7:00 - 7:00 with access also available on weekends when classes are in session. Individuals assigned to courses utilizing the Laboratories will be able to access the labs using faculty ID; individuals requiring limited access to the Nursing Arts Laboratory or Assessment labs need to see the College receptionist for entry.

Computers

All offices are equipped with a personal computer that is replaced every four years, and is subject to the Desktop System Plan policies. Each full time faculty office is also equipped with a personal printer. Additionally, black and white networked laser printers are available in the Faculty Work Room (218) and in the Administrative Suite Work Room (153) for large print jobs, and a color laser jet printer is available in the Student Services Work Room (114) for color printouts. Computers are loaded with the most current version of Microsoft Office software Upon employment with the University, all new employees are assigned a user account, often called an SSO (Single Sign On) ID or a MyGateway ID. This account allows the individual to log on to all lab and classroom computers on campus and the individual office computer. Faculty are also assigned an email address, which is linked to the individual SSO ID. The College uses email as a primary means of communication; faculty should contact the Software Support Expert or the helpdesk if unable to check email. Email can be accessed through the web at http://outlook.umsl.edu or through the Microsoft Outlook program on individual office computers. Technical support is available through the Technology Support Center (Help Desk). Faculty may also call them at (314) 516-6034 or email them at helpdesk@umsl.edu.

Each full-time faculty member has a dedicated homepage as part of the College's Web site. A uniform template is used. Faculty work with the College's Software Support Expert to prepare and update individual homepages as needed.

Scanners are available to scan text and graphics. The Administrative Assistants and Software Support Expert all have access to these scanners.

Computer Store

The campus computer store, located in the University Bookstore in the Millennium Student Center on North Campus, has a wide variety of computer software at nominal prices for faculty purchase.

Bookstore

The campus bookstore is located on the second floor in Millennium Student Center on the North Campus and has a variety of items in addition to textbooks. Faculty members showing a valid ID are entitled to a 10% discount.

Parking

Parking is by permit and is renewed annually each fall. Faculty parking is a benefit and not assessed an individual fee. Designated faculty parking lots are located throughout the campus. The primary parking space lot for nursing is located in the South Campus parking garage across from the College. Parking in non-designated areas will result in ticketing. Handicapped parking and access is available in the rear of the College of Nursing Building.

Visitors are to be instructed to park in the designated spaces. If all visitor parking is full, visitors should be instructed to see the College front desk secretary.

Shuttle

A free shuttle system is available for transportation throughout the campus.

Classrooms

Seton Hall, located on the northwest side of the College of Nursing building, is used for a majority of nursing courses. Classes may also be scheduled in South Campus Classroom Building, South Campus Computer Building, or on the North Campus. Classrooms are scheduled through the Registrar's Office and are not to be moved without prior approval from the Registrar. Further information is available through the Office of Student Services.

Each classroom is equipped with chalkboard, overhead projector, and slide projector. Technology- enhanced classrooms are also available.

Several courses are telecommunicated each semester. Dedicated classrooms with audiovisual interactive capabilities are located on the North and South Campuses. An orientation to teaching via interactive telecommunication is required prior to the initial use of this modality. Courses identified as telecommunicated must include a minimum of 50% on air-time. Further information is available through the associate deans.

The College has extensive Outreach Programs off campus. Faculty assigned to teach a course through Outreach are oriented by the associate deans. Faculty assigned to an Outreach-based course that is telecommunicated are expected to make a minimum of two trips to each Outreach site per semester. Materials used as handouts need to be provided to the Faculty Administrative Assistant a minimum of three weeks before needed to ensure sufficient time for preparation and mailing.

Conference Rooms

A total of four conference rooms are available in the College of Nursing building Conference rooms are reserved through the Student Services Secretary (ext 7081). As these rooms are made available to groups other than nursing, a reservation is required. Audio visual equipment is available in the College of Nursing building and is reserved through the Software Support Specialist (163).

Seton Hall classrooms may also be reserved for times not used for scheduled courses. Seton Hall reservations are made through Student Services Secretary (ext. 7081).

Clinical Skills/Simulation Center

Two fully equipped learning laboratories and two health assessment laboratories are located in Seton Hall on the ground floor, the first floor, and the second floor. Open lab hours, posted on the main lab door (B3), are maintained each semester for student practice and remedial instruction. The laboratory serves as the repository for the College's audiovisual materials. Faculty members wishing to reserve the health assessment lab/classroom on the second floor of Seton Hall should contact the Student Services Secretary (7081). Library Resources

The University has three libraries; the Thomas Jefferson, Mercantile, and Ward E. Barnes Libraries. Nursing-related holdings are located in Ward E. Barnes Library, located adjacent to the South Campus Classroom Building on the South Campus. Interlibrary loan is available at no charge to faculty. Library access is also available online. Faculty members are encouraged to seek an orientation to Ward E. Barnes by the staff librarians (See Library overview for additional information).

Wellness Programs

The University's fitness facility, located in the Mark Twain Building, is available to faculty at no cost. The center includes a full complement of fitness equipment, in-door track and pool. A current faculty/staff ID is required for entrance. Wellness programming is available through the Healthy for Life, T.E. Atkins UM Wellness Program, Rn. 238 Mark Twain building.
