What is HyFlex?
Hybrid Flexible or "HyFlex" learning is an innovative teaching model that integrates in-person, online synchronous (through Zoom), and online asynchronous (through Canvas) modes of engagement. The Registrar describes HyFlex as an instructional approach that combines face-to-face (F2F) and online learning. Class sessions and learning activities are offered simultaneously in-person and synchronously online, while also being offered asynchronously online, with students deciding how to participate based on their needs and preferences.
UMSL offers a limited number of HyFlex courses each semester in specially equipped classrooms. Faculty who teach in HyFlex must complete comprehensive training through the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) as well as with UM Academic Technology to ensure successful course delivery.
Getting Ready to Teach HyFlex
To prepare for teaching HyFlex, faculty must complete the following steps:
- Take the Online Teaching Certification Seminar.
- Have your course reviewed through the Quality Course Review process.
- Participate in the HyFlex Sprint to engage with other faculty and learn successful strategies.
- Complete an individual consultation with the CTL Learning Innovation Specialist or an Instructional Designer to ensure your course content is ready for the HyFlex modality.
- Attend a practice session in your assigned HyFlex classroom with CTL and Information Technology Services (ITS) team members to trial-run your pedagogical plans and master the technology.
UMSL Support for HyFlex Faculty
The CTL partners with Information Technology Services (ITS) to provide comprehensive support tailored to the University context. This support includes two major components:
Consultation
Individual sessions with CTL staff members help faculty develop strategies for using classroom technology, engaging and assessing students across modalities, and integrating HyFlex-specific policies and syllabus statements. Consultations should be completed well in advance of the teaching term.
Classroom Practice
Hands-on practice sessions in the assigned HyFlex classroom include tips on leveraging in-room technology, maneuvering the room layout, and maximizing pedagogical goals for class sessions. These individualized sessions are scheduled according to faculty availability and preference.
By combining consultations with classroom practice sessions, faculty can successfully implement HyFlex courses that provide equitable engagement and access to students across all three modalities. UMSL support continues throughout the semester with ongoing technology assistance and teaching observation feedback.
