Freshman Merit Scholarship

Freshman Merit Scholarships are only available to First-time College students pursuing their first Bachelor’s Degree. Merit scholarships (Curators, Chancellors, Gold, Red, & UMSL) are not stackable. The University reserves the right to replace any offers with other offers of an equal total amount from other funding sources, including external sources.

A first-time college student will automatically be considered for Admissions scholarships when the student is admitted to the University. Students are given priority consideration when they are admitted on or before March 1 preceding the start of the academic year. Students must enroll at UMSL in the fall semester immediately following their high school graduation.

Renewal  This scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years as long as students maintain a 3.0 GPA. There is no additional application for this scholarship. It is automatic once students have been admitted to UMSL. This scholarship cannot be combined with merit-based scholarships.

Enrollment Requirements

Students receiving a Merit Scholarship (Curators, Chancellors, Gold, Red & UMSL) or a Non-Resident Scholarship (Gateway, Provost, Deans) must maintain full-time enrollment (or a minimum of 12 credit hours) each semester. If students receiving these scholarships drop to less than full-time enrollment at any point before the last day of the 50% reassessment schedule for that given semester, they will forfeit the scholarship for that term AND may lose eligibility for these scholarship types in future semesters.

Merit scholarships are typically offered in accordance with students taking 14 credit hours. The scholarship amount will be prorated if a student is enrolled in 12-13 credit hours. For additional information we encourage you to review our scholarship FAQs.

  • This process is strictly regarding Merit Scholarships as your other financial aid may have different stipulations.

Scholarship Appeal Process

Students who do not meet the renew requirements for Merit Scholarships will be notified via their UMSL email once a year. Once notified a student can file an appeal by completing the scholarship appeal form on the Forms page and submitting it to scholarships@umsl.edu. Appeals should provide specific reasons for why the renewal requirements were not met and what changes have been made to correct the issue. There is no guarantee that any appeal will be approved. In cases where a student’s health impacted performance or their ability to meet the requirements, appropriate documentation should be provided.
