Understanding and Incorporating Critical Digital Literacy into Practice

This workshop explores how counselors can integrate critical digital literacy into their practice to better understand, navigate, and challenge the digital landscapes that impact clients’ lives. Participants will examine how issues such as misinformation, digital identity, online communities, and systemic inequities shape mental health and counseling relationships. Practical strategies will be shared to help counselors use digital tools ethically and advocate for clients in an increasingly digital world.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to define the concept of critical digital literacy and examples of it in social media and other online media.
2. Participants will discuss how critical digital literacy is connected to clients' mental health and social justice advocacy efforts of counselors and counselors-in-training.
3. Participants will be provided with ways to incorporate and apply critical digital literacy into clinical practice.

Trauma-Informed Practical Care

This workshop will explore how safety, connection, and emotional regulation are vital to trauma-informed practices. Be informed, empathic, and culturally responsive when working with trauma.

  1. Understand how trauma affects the body and how that impacts behavior.
  2. Understand the scope of trauma and its impact on society, especially in the educational setting.
  3. Identify and learn trauma-informed interventions for emotional regulation.

Embracing Diversity: A Playful Approach to Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

As the field of neurodiversity-affirming care continues to evolve, it is crucial for play therapists to explore and understand the unique challenges and strengths that may arise. In this interactive workshop, participants will embark on a journey to explore innovative and inclusive play therapy practices that celebrate diversity, foster self-acceptance, and create therapeutic spaces that honor the complexity of individual identities and support needs.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will accurately identify at least three (3) unique challenges and three (3) strengths commonly experienced by neurodivergent children and teens within play therapy through group discussions and case study analyses.
2. Participants will successfully implement at least two (2) inclusive play therapy techniques for neurodivergent youth during simulated therapeutic scenarios, demonstrating adaptability and competence.
3. Participants will propose two (2) strengths-based solutions to challenges faced by neurodivergent children and teens in a scenario, actively celebrating diversity and incorporating affirming language within the playroom.

Rover Rover, Come on Over: Pet Assisted Therapy

Pet/Animal assisted therapy can provide emotional, social, and physical support for individuals. We will explore the benefits of adding pet therapy into practice along with meeting and greeting a therapy dog named Hannah who works with specific populations.

Learning Objectives:

1. Exploring the research findings of using animal assisted therapies in practice.
2. Looking at specific populations and conditions where adding pet therapy would be helpful.
3. Potential risks and ethical considerations for using animal assisted therapies.
