The Department of Biology offers a variety of certificate programs to enhance the graduate education in biology. Graduate certificates may be earned as part of the M.S. or Ph.D. program, or independently, without a graduate degree.

Graduate Biotechnology Certificate Program

The biotechnology program provides academic specialization in a rapidly growing field that encompasses molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology. The program emphasizes both the fundamental principles that underlie biotechnology as well as the techniques that are used in their application. The program includes a certificate that can be earned independently or in conjunction degree in biology. Students in the program have access to state of the art equipment, including an automated DNA sequencer. In addition, they are encouraged to participate in research or internships, to gain practical experience in this rapidly expanding field.

Graduate Certificate in Global Biodiversity Conservation and Leadership

The certificate is awarded after completion of 18 credit hours of core courses and electives with a minimum of 12 credits at the 5000 or 6000 level. Up to 3 credits may be taken at the 2000 - 3000 level upon permission of the Graduate Committee. Electives must include a minimum of 3 credits outside biology with a maximum of 7 outside biology. A maximum of 3 credits may be taken elsewhere than UM-St. Louis. Students may simultaneously earn a graduate degree and count credits earned in their degree program toward the certificate when appropriate.
