Biotechnology Program
The biotechnology program provides academic specialization in a rapidly growing field that encompasses molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology. The program emphasizes both the fundamental principles that underlie biotechnology as well as the techniques that are used in their application. The program includes a graduate certificate that can be earned independently or in conjunction with a Master's or Ph.D. in biology. The certificate in biotechnology is an 18 credit hour program that includes advanced level courses in techniques in molecular biology, gene expression in eucaryotes, gene expression in procaryotes, and a variety of elective courses in immunology, cell biology and biochemistry. Students in the program have access to state of the art equipment, including an automated DNA sequencer. In addition, they may participate in an internship program to gain practical experience in this rapidly expanding field.
