2023 Summer Financial Aid Guide

The Student Financial Services Office has begun processing summer financial aid. Students will be reviewed for eligibility after we have your 2022-2023 FAFSA and any supporting documents, and you are enrolled in minimum hours for the summer. Please allow 7-14 business days for your eligibility to be determined before following up with the office. Once your aid has been offered, you should receive notification through your UMSL email account within 2-3 business days.

Summer aid will be offered based on your enrollment and your remaining eligibility (if any) for Pell or Direct Student Loans after the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters. If you are a graduate student who has exhausted eligibility for the Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan, your award notice will include information about your eligibility for the Direct Grad PLUS Loan. To receive that loan, you must first apply and be approved based on a credit check. If you are an undergraduate student enrolled at least half time and you do not qualify for any aid, you will receive a notice discussing other options, such as the PLUS and private loans.

  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours and Graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 hours (the total sum of all sessions) to be eligible for federal loans.
  • Federal loans will be disbursed no sooner than your first day of half-time enrollment. Borrowers must have Loan Entrance Counseling and a signed Master Promissory Note on file with our office.

Examples:

  • You registered for 3 hours in Session 1 and 3 hours in Session 2. The funds will not disburse to your account before June 12, 2023, because you are not considered half time until June 12, 2023 when your Session 2 class begins*.
  • You registered for 3 hours in Session 1 and 5 hours in Session 3. The funds will not disburse to your account before July 10, 2023, because you are not considered half time until July 10, 2023 when your Session 3 class begins.

Visit the Office of the Registrar’s website to view the Summer Sessions offered on the Academic Calendar.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Even if you are offered financial aid for the upcoming summer semester, your financial aid will be immediately suspended if you do not maintain satisfactory academic progress at the end of the spring semester. If you are working in a Federal Work-Study funded position and your financial aid eligibility is suspended you must cease working immediately. For more information about financial aid and satisfactory academic progress standards, please view the SAP guidelines posted on our web site.

* Most courses start on the session start date—where classes start after the session start date, the disbursement will happen.
