First Year Experience Courses

UMSL invests in out-of-classroom experiences. All new students are invited to attend a variety of events organized by campus partners and streamlined to assist new students during their first year of college. View the various FYE courses below.

UMSL’s FYE course provides students the opportunity to make connections with faculty and other students, to discover the wide range of resources UMSL provides its students, and to become part of the university, and local community. Using experiential-based learning techniques, guest speakers, and on-campus visit, students will engage in the academic, cultural, resource, social, and co-curricular opportunities found on UMSL’s campus.

These courses are developed around three cornerstones: Campus Connections, Academic Engagement, and Development Support.

Peer Mentors

Our First Year Experience courses are led by outstanding faculty, staff, and student peer mentors. They go through training, curriculum design, and meet monthly to discuss benchmarking concepts on how to assist first-year students succeed.

In April, there is a recruitment and interview process that occurs.

FYE Course Instructor Application

UMSL’s FYE course provides students the opportunity to make connections with faculty and other students, to discover the wide range of resources UMSL provides its students, and to become part of the university, and local community. Using experiential-based learning techniques, guest speakers, and on-campus visit, students will engage in the academic, cultural, resource, social, and co-curricular opportunities found on UMSL’s campus.

Experience:

  • Triton Challenge. Promote the WOW booklet and encourage students to attend at least 3 co-curricular events to increase awareness of programs, resources, incentives to get involved around campus
  • 4-6 Week Check-In Survey. Students will complete a google survey administered by New Student Programs as an assignment during the four to six week of classes. Individual reports will be collected.
  • FYE Fall Courses Reunion. New Student Programs will assist in coordinating a Fall FYE course sections to include the students who were enrolled, their peer mentors and instructors to reconnect in January. (TBA)
  • One is Done Celebration. (FYE awards, Alpha Lambda Delta & Tau Sigma Inductions)

FYE courses will help students make the transition to academic life at UMSL by focusing on creative and critical thinking abilities, cultivating effective communication skills, exploring attitudes and behaviors appropriate in the academic setting, and introducing students to a variety of research tools and methods.

Experience:

  • Investing in peer mentors into each course
  • Reflective writing activity on transition to college. Each course will use a reflection tool to allow students in the course to reflect and provide insight to their transition to academic life. Peer leaders will be used to provide a response or insight to assist new students through this transition. This activity can be weekly writing assignments, online or printed Triton Goldprint FYE workbook.

First Year Course instructors are provided support for key developmental content that is instrumental in successful student engagement, the development of self-efficacy and career maturity, and effective decision-making.

The courses will provide guest instructors and support services for core FYS developmental curricula including:

  • University resources and student engagement
  • Career readiness
  • Personal support
  • Skill development
