In order to enroll in entry-level college Mathematics courses, a student must demonstrate appropriate background mathematical knowledge and skills. UMSL accepts multiple ways of demonstrating this knowledge including ACT math subscores for new first-year students and online math placement test scores for all students. To view Mathematics Course Pre-requisite Information and to access the online math placement test please visit, Campus Testing Center.
If you plan to enroll in a language course during your first semester and feel that you may be able to test out of one or more introductory level courses please contact Jim Karslake at firstname.lastname@example.org or (314) 516-6240 to sign up for language placement testing BEFORE your Orientation date.
Missouri Higher Education Civics Achievement Examination (MHECAE)
All undergraduate students who are newly enrolled in a Missouri two-year or four-year college on or after July 1, 2019 are required by Missouri state law to take and pass the Missouri Higher Education Civics Achievement Examination (MHECAE) in order to receive an associate's or bachelor's degree. Students who were enrolled in an academic term prior to July 1, 2019 are NOT required to take and/or pass the exam. The MHECAE is similar to the one hundred questions administered to applicants for U.S. citizenship by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Students must pass successfully with a score of seventy percent or greater as a condition of graduation from such institution. You can find this examination in MyGateway, then in your Canvas account.
