Attention Honors College students! There are a lot more honors for you to take advantage of than just the Pierre Laclede Honors College. Please consider applying for any relevant departmental honors, academic honors societies, and degree honors available to you.
Golden Key International Honour Society: Golden Key is open to students in all majors and celebrates academics, leadership, and service. If you are sophomore, junior, or senior in the top 15% of your class, you might qualify.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi: The oldest, largest, and most-selective honor society open to all majors is by invitation only. Invitations are issued each fall to the to 7.5% of juniors and top 10% of seniors.
Anthropology – Lambda Alpha, the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology: If you are in good standing in the PLHC and have at least 12 hours in anthropology, you might already qualify.
Chemistry – Departmental Honors: The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will award departmental honors to those B.A. and B.S. degree candidates in chemistry with an overall grade point average of 3.2. They must also successfully complete CHEM 3905: Chemical Research and must present an acceptable thesis. Visit the departmental bulletin page for more information. CHEM 3905 counts toward your Honors College independent study requirement!
Communication – Lambda Pi Eta, the Honor Society of the National Communication Association, Rho Chi Chapter at UMSL: If you are a junior in good standing in the PLHC, are majoring or minoring in communication or media studies, and have at least 12 hours in communication or media studies, you might already qualify. Economics – Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Economics Honor Society: If you are in good standing in the PLHC and have at least 12 hours in economics, you might already qualify.
English – Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. If you are a sophomore English major in good standing in the PLHC, you might already qualify. Sigma Tau Delta is also open to interested non-majors who have taken an English class after first year writing. Visit their departmental or national websites for more information. History – Phi Alpha Theta, the International History Honors Society: If you are in good standing in the PLHC and have completed at least 12 hours in History, you might already qualify. Visit the history website for more information and consider applying (PDF).
Philosophy – Pi Sigma Tau, the International Honor Society in Philosophy: If you are in good standing in the PLHC and have completed at least 9 hours in philosophy, you might already qualify. Visit the Pi Sigma Tau website for more information.
Physics – Departmental Honors: The Department of Physics & Astronomy will award departmental honors to those B.A. and B.S. degree candidates in Physics with an overall grade point average of 3.2. They must also successfully complete at least 3 credits of PHYS 3390: Research. Visit the departmental page for more information. PHYS 3390 counts toward your Honors College independent study requirement!
Political Science – Departmental Honors: Departmental Honors are awarded to students having at least a 3.2 GPA in the Political Science major, an overall GPA of at least 3.2, and successful completion of an honors thesis, project, or report (for example, a research paper prepared for PS 3900: Special Readings). Political Science – Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honors Society: If you area junior in good standing in PLHC and have at least 15 hours in Political Science, you might already qualify. Psychology – Psi Chi, the International Honors Society for Psychology Majors and Minors: If you have a declared major or minor in psychology and meet the credit hour and GPA requirements, you are encouraged to apply to Psi Chi. If you’re in good standing in Honors (3.2 GPA), you might already qualify. Additionally, undergraduate students are selected to receive the Chair’s List Award. Did you know that the work you’re doing to complete your Honors College independent study requirement might also help qualify you for a degree with distinction? Students majoring in any undergraduate degree program that have obtained a minimum of 75 credits; have begun research, scholarship, or creative endeavors of exceptional quality; have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average; and have a faculty mentor may apply for candidacy during their final year before graduation. Candidates produce a novel body of work that includes publication-quality research data from which to generate a senior thesis or a body of artistic accomplishments that can be displayed and/or presented as part of an exhibition or performance. Accomplishments obtained through research, fellowships, internships, and voluntary work may be used. Candidates must present and successfully defend their project to a faculty review committee.
