Student Support and Services at The Writing Center

The UMSL Writing Center provides students with one-on-one consultations to help plan, write, and revise their writing projects. We want your voice to be heard and we will help you shape it to best communicate your ideas.

We work with both Undergraduate and and Graduate students across all academic disciplines and with any and all kinds of writing, and in lots of meaningful ways:

  • Get help understanding your assignment
  • Brainstorm and identify your approach to get started
  • Form interesting research questions and hypotheses
  • Organize your ideas
  • Structure your writing
  • Help with research and supporting claims with evidence
  • Citation and formatting systems (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, and others)
  • Improving clarity, word choice, phrasing, and delivery
  • Identify and address recurring grammar and punctuation concerns
  • Revise drafts and implement feedback meaningfully

Consultants work with numerous kinds of writing. We frequently work with:

  • Essay assignments
  • Short writing assignments
  • Doctoral work and dissertations
  • Masters theses and capstone projects
  • Creative writing
  • Cover letters and resumes
  • Graduate school application materials
  • Personal Statements
  • Group projects
  • Multimodal assignments
  • Speech/oral presentations
  • And much more!

While we do not guarantee better grades or proofread/copy edit student work, we provide an environment and assistance that lead students to be self-directed learners and engaged in their writing.
