Faculty Support at the Writing Center
The Writing Center is happy to partner with faculty in a number of ways. From including our services on your syllabus and assignments to inviting us into your classrooms for presentations or writing workshops, our goal is to help your students learn and succeed in a supportive environment. See below for more information about how we might assist you and your students.
An introduction to the Writing Center
Feel free to post this 9-minute introduction video to your Canvas sites or send directly to students.
Including the Writing Center on your syllabus and assignments
Below you’ll find language you're welcome to include on your syllabi, assignments, or any other spaces you might want to help students learn about our services:
The UMSL Writing Center offers appointment-based writing support for writers at any stage of the writing process. From getting started to revising and polishing a final draft, our qualified writing consultants offer useful feedback, ask important questions about your writing, and help with writing strategies that build confidence. Appointments are available in person and online (Live Chat and Feedback via Email). Book an appointment today!
Collaborate with the Writing Center
The Writing Center is happy to work with faculty to strengthen assignment design, incorporate Writing Center support into an assignment, and provide short classroom presentations on how Writing Center services work.
If you have a special request, such as a writing workshop or other event, please contact Coordinator Dr. Chris Schott to discuss options.
Referring students to the Writing Center
We want our space and services to be welcoming and meaningful for all writers. We welcome student referrals, though we do ask our services are framed as part of the writing and learning process, and not as a punitive measure. Please consider including this language when referring students:
For valuable feedback while you are writing, the UMSL Writing Center is a strong next step. They can help you understand and meet assignment expectations, clarify your purpose, strengthen organization, and revise with intention. Don’t wait until the last minute, go early in your drafting, bring the assignment prompt/rubric, your current draft and notes, and leave feeling better and more on track.
Proof-of-Visit
If you require verification your students visited the Writing Center, we offer a Client Report Form for every required visit. The Writing Center can provide a Client Report Form upon request that summarizes what was worked on during the consultation. Students are responsible for requesting a Client Report Form; session details are only collected and shared upon request.
What the Writing Center Will Not Do
The Writing Center assists writers at any stage of the writing process and just about any writing concern. However, the Writing Center will not:
- Do any proofreading/copy-editing on behalf of the student. We will help students learn how to edit their own work;
- Correct grammar/citations for the student; we will gladly show them the patterns of error being made and how to address them
- Evaluate or "grade" writing
