Writing Certificate Internships

Writing Certificate Internships

Through our community partnerships, our internships allow students to go beyond the classroom and get experience in real professional and creative settings. Through the internship course, ENGL 4890: Writing Internship, writing certificate students work in supervised placements while learning to write for real audiences, build experience, confidence, and finish with portfolio-ready materials before graduation.

The internship serves as a required part of the Professional Writing Certificate and the Business and Technical Writing Certificate. It is also available to students working toward the Creative Writing Certificate, though it is not required.

Our students have completed internships with many respected organizations and St. Louis institutions. You can find their work with St. Louis Magazine, Elsevier, River Styx, Litmagthe UMSL Writing Center, and Humans of St. Louis, among others.

These experiences help students strengthen their writing in live workplace and community contexts while making professional connections and gaining a clearer sense of where their writing can take them.
