About Sarah
Sarah Kiser (they/them) is a soon-to-be-published novelist who writes fairy tale-inspired fantasy with a bent toward the gothic, the macabre, and the romantic. After receiving their MA in English Literature at UMSL and taking a break to dedicate themself to writing novels, they have returned to UMSL to pursue their MFA. They look forward to honing their craft as a writer and as an instructor while working with students to explore themselves through writing as creative, knowledgeable, and autonomous humans. Some of their academic areas of interest (which inevitably bleed into their fiction) include gender and sexuality, other-than-human nature, madness, disability, monsters and monstrosity, borders, the abject, and the ways they intersect. At UMSL, Sarah works in UMSL's Writing Center and with First-Year Composition courses.
Their debut novel, Hunt the Ever Wild, is being published by Angry Robot in June 2026.

“The sense of community and belonging I found throughout my MA in English Lit at UMSL was instrumental in building the confidence I needed to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a published novelist, while the rigorous, engaging instruction I received refined the skills I needed to see my dream come true. Our UMSL English students are sharp, dedicated, and determined, and not only are our faculty noteworthy and talented, the care and encouragement they give to their instruction helped empower me to come into my own as a thinker, as a queer, trans, working class writer, and as a human being. When I decided to pursue my MFA, there was only one program I had in mind.”Sarah Kiser On her experience in the MA and MFA Programs
