About
Dr. Schott teaches a variety of courses at UMSL, all within the field composition and rhetoric. Frequently taught courses include Writing in the Sciences (English 3160), Technical Communication (3130), Literate Lives (2410), and most recently, Horror and Rhetoric (4950). At the core of Dr. Schott's teaching is helping people build meaningful, practical, and progressive ways of communicating and understanding each other.
Until 2026, Dr. Schott served as the Coordinator for UMSL’s Writing Center, a powerful university resource that collaborates with UMSL students, faculty, staff, and alumni at fostering a well-connected and supportive community and culture of writing across campus. He is also a faculty member of the College of Business's Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, where he helps doctoral students prepare for their dissertation research and writing. Dr. Schott also serves as a faculty mentor for Heritage Leader graduate students completing their doctoral work in education.
Administratively, Dr. Schott serves the English Department's Associate Chair of Programming and Communication, as a student advisor, and helps to facilitate Advanced Credit Placement (ACP) courses for St. Louis area high schools.
With his own research, Dr. Schott studies public rhetoric, discourse, and communication, writing center studies, as well as scholarship in horror.
Outside of UMSL, Dr. Schott spends his time writing, playing, and publishing music, making art with his wife, and watching every scary movie he might come across.
