ABSTRACT: The collection focuses on three individuals: Silas Bent [Junior](1768-1827), Silas Bent [III] (1820-1887), and Crittenden McKinley. The collection of Silas Bent [Junior] includes correspondence and ephemera. The topics covered are mainly concerning Bent's various appointments throughout his career. The collection of Silas Bent [III] includes correspondence, books, a scrapbook, ephemera, a sword, and bonds. The topics covered are mainly concerning his military and insurance career. The Crittenden McKinley collection includes a scrapbook and some photographs. McKinley was married to Bent's [III] daughter, Lucy.

SCOPE: The Bent-McKinley Collection consists of the papers of Silas Bent (1768-1827) [ hereafter referred to as "Silas Bent [Junior]" to distinguish him from his father, Silas Bent (1744-1818), and a son Silas Bent (1820-1887)], Silas Bent (1820 -1887) [ hereafter referred to as "Silas Bent [III]" to distinguish him from his grandfath er, Silas Bent (1768-1827), father, Silas Bent [Junior], and his son, Silas Bent (1882 -1945)], and Crittenden McKinley (1854-).

Silas Bent's [Junior] papers mainly consist of professional correspondences concerning his first employment position and continue until his death. Included are many warrants for his various appointments.

Silas Bent's [III] collection consists mainly of his professional correspondences, clippings related to ship travel, a scrapbook, a large collection of bonds, and books either created by or received during his lifetime. Also included in the collection is Bent's personal military service sword. Both his military career and his insurance career are well represented.

The Crittenden McKinley papers consist of some photographs and a scrapbook.

ACCESS: This collection has been arranged into four series: 1) Silas Bent [Junior] papers; 2) Silas Bent [III] collection; 3) Crittenden McKinley papers; and 4 ) Miscellaneous. Most of the correspondences are bound within books. Any loose corresponde nces are arranged according to the original order rather than chronologically. Some of the correspondences have been described to the item level. All other items have been arranged according to the orginal order.
