The study of literature, language, and the arts of reading and writing is central to the mission of the University of Missouri-St. Louis English Department. Distinguished teachers, scholars and writers offer a wide variety of courses, programs, and opportunities for learning and research both in St. Louis and abroad.
The
undergraduate program offers both a
Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in English, with a rich literary concentration and optional areas of additional emphasis. Students who specialize in writing may obtain a
Writing Certificate or publish their creative writing in
Litmag, the student magazine. Those intending to pursue a career in teaching may do so through the
English Education program.
The
graduate program offers an
Master of Arts in English with a concentration in literature or composition, taught by eminent and well-published scholars. The
Master of Fine Arts provides study under the direction of a faculty of prize-winning novelists, poets and short story writers, and the opportunity to work on
Natural Bridge, an international journal of creative writing. Graduate students may also pursue a
Certificate in the Teaching of Writing; those who are practicing teachers may join the
Gateway Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project.
The English Department collaborates in many of its offerings with the
Pierre Laclede Honors College, the
Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies, and the
Irish Studies program. Opportunities for study abroad exist through the
Galway Summer Program, the
Missouri London Program, and the
Center for International Studies. The department also operates the
Writing Academic Center (222 SSB), which offers assistance to students in all university divisions.
We invite you to meet English Department advisors and find out more about our offerings on the 4th floor of Lucas hall, or explore further at our website.
