Catherine's Success Story

"Hello UMSL Family, My name is Catherine Johnson. I am a mother of five beautiful daughters, a wife to an amazing man, and a caregiver to my lovely Mommy. My life is filled with love, responsibilities, and hope. With 40 knocking at my door, I have decided to pursue my Master's degree. This journey has not been easy, but I do believe the reward will be worth the challenges. I must admit, I have found myself wanting to throw in the towel and quit a time or two, but I am learning the power of grit and grace. My life, your life, has seen many challenges, but I am sure that with each struggle, you and I have both learned the beauty of bouncing back. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned along this and many other journeys is the pace of grace. I consistently have to remind myself that I am on my own unique path that doesn't have to be fueled with anxiety trying to keep up with my peers. I am also learning how to ask for help. Typically, I am the "fixer," but lately, I have had to become more vulnerable and express my needs. Each and every time I have laid pride down, grace and favor have been the response. Give yourself permission to be helped; it's ok. Lastly, I am trying to do better with self-care. Although I don't always see where I can fit that time in, it must be done. Even if we have to start with 15 solid minutes to ourselves, it is worth the effort. Prayer and devotion are also crucial components of my self-care, as I find encouragement, guidance, strength, hope, and peace in the presence of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I hope that I have shared something that will encourage you to keep going. We will finish strong!  "
