The Wind Ensemble is UMSL's premier concert band. Membership is open to students of all majors and there is no audition to join the Wind Ensemble, though students will play a brief chair-placement audition during the first weeks of school.

The UMSL Wind Ensemble's mission is to pursue creativity in music-making through performances of music for winds and percussion written by composers who reflect the complete diversity and richness of the human experience - this especially includes composers of traditionally under-represented backgrounds. Through the rehearsal and performance of this repertoire, ensemble members have the opportunity to grow musically through a wide array of compositional techniques, rehearsal processes, and expressive possibilities.

The UMSL Wind Ensemble rehearses in the beautiful Touhil Performing Arts Center, on Mondays from 2:00-3:15, and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7:00.

To join the ensemble, please contact Dr. Wacyk and register for EN PER 1530. For any questions, please contact: Dr. David Wacyk, Director of Instrumental Music, at Dmwdb8@umsl.edu or  Instrumentalmusic@umsl.edu.

Join our Fanfare Commissioning Consortium!

To celebrate UMSL’s 60th anniversary, the UMSL Music Department has commissioned nationally renowned composers to write a new fanfare. Each fanfare will be performed at an UMSL band and orchestra concert during the 23/24 season.

Additionally, we are opening this up to the national community of university band and orchestra directors, who would like to buy-in to a consortium for this project. The buy-in fee is $100.

As the UMSL Wind Ensemble continues to grow stronger following the pandemic, we have a few openings for partner-members of the community or professional players of wind/brass/percussion, who are interested in joining UMSLWE and helping us move into the future! We also accept a select number talented high school musicians, depending on availability.
