The UMSL Department of Music offers a variety of undergraduate degrees and extraordinary performance opportunities that prepare students for careers as teachers, performers, and scholars.
Students choose from a wide range of areas of study and benefit from individualized instruction by dedicated faculty members who are renowned artists/teachers, scholars, and educators. Both majors and non-majors have the opportunity to participate in numerous ensembles, from small chamber groups to a full-size orchestra, choir, and wind ensemble.
I chose UMSL specifically because the music department understands that a musician’s role in society extends beyond performing. My aspiration is to leave UMSL as a well-rounded humanitarian and a skilled violist. I want to carry on the university’s tradition of service, using my artistry to change that distance I felt growing up into a community.
UMSL gave music back to me. Since returning to France, I have played in more than ten ensembles of all kinds. I serve on the board of an orchestra, and I’ve started conducting a small brass band. I’m preparing to begin formal conducting training. Hopefully, my musical journey won't stop now, as I am applying to return to the US for an Arts Administration master's degree. I want to help build the kind of open, welcoming musical communities I found at UMSL.
