Mezzo-soprano Erin Haupt (Instructor of Voice) is a native of St. Louis and a proud alumna of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Active both in opera and oratorio, Ms. Haupt has been seen locally with Union Avenue Opera and Winter Opera St. Louis. Some of her opera credits include Berta, Il barbiere di Siviglia; La Badessa, Suor Angelica; Edith, Pirates of Penzance; Marcellina, Le nozze di Figaro; Pitti-Sing, Mikado; Hermia, Midsummer Night’s Dream; Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore; and Sister Veronica, Doubt. As a concert soloist, Ms. Haupt has been featured with Masterworks Choral, The Kingsbury Ensemble, Bach Society St. Louis, St. Louis Cathedral Concert Series, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and UMSL. Ms. Haupt is the winner of the Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition and was a Young Artist for the Bach Society of St. Louis. She currently serves as a principal singer for the American Kantorei.
Haupt holds degrees from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (BM), Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville (MM) and has completed the coursework for her DMA at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She additionally received a certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from SIUE and CCM Vocal Pedagogy from Shenandoah University. As an instructor she has had the opportunity to teach a wide range of courses from History of Rock & Roll, Music Appreciation, Vocal Pedagogy, Diction, Music Fundamentals and Applied Voice. She currently teaches Applied Voice at Wash U and is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
What do you love about teaching?
I love being a part of each student's journey in finding their instrument. It is always such an exciting experience to be a part of!
What is your favorite music to sing and what is something you love about singing?
I love singing classical music, anything from opera to art song. I find that there is always something to discover no matter how long you have had a piece in your repertoire.
What is a skill you've learned as a musician that you use in your everyday life?
Proper preparation makes any situation more enjoyable. There are a lot of hours spent alone preparing music to ensure that when everyone comes together it is successful, this can be applied in so many areas of our personal and professional lives.
