The University of Missouri requires that all students demonstrate readiness for our math courses. One way to do this is by earning a sufficient score on a Math Placement Test.

The Math Placement Test covers material in three separate tests: Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra and Pre-Calculus. To determine which test you should take, refer to the course prerequisites, listed below. The Intermediate Algebra Test is unproctored and may be taken from home. The College Algebra and Pre-Calculus Tests are proctored and must be taken through the UMSL Testing Center. To schedule your proctored College Algebra or Precalculus exam at the UMSL Testing Center, click this link to access the registration site. If you would like to take a placement test at a different testing location, please email testing@umsl.edu to make arrangements. Note that fees may apply.

For more information and to access the placement test, please click on the link in your Canvas Dashboard or under Courses in Canvas.

While your course may not be present on your Dashboard, it is present in your list of all courses. To access this list, click the Courses button on the left side of the screen in Canvas. At the top of the fly-out menu, click on "All Courses". This will provide you with all the courses that you have access to.

Prerequisites for Entry into Mathematics Courses

In order to enroll in entry-level college Mathematics courses, a student must demonstrate appropriate background mathematical knowledge and skills. Depending upon the course, there are multiple ways of demonstrating this knowledge. If you have questions about these prerequisites, your advisor can help. Click this link to find your advisor.

The following table provides the current math placement requirements for the indicated courses.
