B-172 Friedmann, John Collection of IC-Southern Merger Study Material

ABSTRACT: A study on the potential acquisition of ICG by the Southern Railway.

SCOPE: The study covers the potential of merging the Southern Railway with Illinois Southern Railroad. It includes 3 study books and around 122 letters of negotiation associated with the potential merger.

EXTENT: 3 study books, approximately 122 negotiation documents/letters

HISTORY: Before this study began, Illinois Central Gulf Railway was managing 13 states with more than 9,000 miles of track. However, they had begun to branch out into consumer product industries and had diverted their focus from their railroad, killing profits in years prior. Southern Railway desired ICG’s railway in order to connect their railway to Omaha and the Pacific Coast.
