B-161 Plan of Alton and Terre Haute Railroad

ABSTRACT: Map of the Alton & Terre Haute Railroad by William P. Crocker and lithographer Julius Hutawa.

SCOPE: The map outlines the route for the railroad that was planned to run through Illinois. The suggested line that passed through Hillsborough, Shelbyville, and Charleston can be found near the top of the map. The topography of the route is described and compared to the latitudinal level of the Mississippi River in the upper right hand corner.

EXTENT: 1 map

HISTORY: The plan and survey for this map occurred in December 1850 and the project was finished in 1856. It was sold and renamed in 1862 to the St Louis, Terre Haute, and Alton Railroad.

ACCESS: This collection can be viewed on-site in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the material may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, subject to condition and other access restrictions. The St. Louis Mercantile Library is located on levels one and two of the Thomas Jefferson Library building on the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ north campus.
