Alpha Mu Gamma

Alpha Mu Gamma is the national collegiate foreign language honor society of the United States, founded in 1931. More than three hundred charters have been granted to chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Chapters are found both in state and private universities and in public and private two- and four-year colleges.

Alpha Mu Gamma has as its primary purpose the honoring of students for outstanding achievement during their first year of college-level, foreign language study. However, students may be admitted at any point in their college careers. Upon initiation, a member receives a parchment certificate of membership and may wear the society’s scroll-shaped gold key or pin.

The University of Missouri - St. Louis’ Nu Delta Chapter holds two induction ceremonies each year, during the Fall and Spring semesters. Induction into the Society does require a $30 membership fee. Benefits of membership include the quarterly Newsletter published by the national office, participation in the on-going, campus-wide activities that serve to promote foreign language study, and of course, recognition for the effort you have made and the excellence you have achieved in your Foreign Language studies. In addition, the national office awards five scholarships annually:

  • $1,000 Maria Goddard Scholarship (All languages are eligible) • $1,000 Josephine L. Indovina Scholarship (All languages are eligible) • $1,000 Meyer Krakowski Scholarship (All languages are eligible) • $1,000 Dr. Earl Thompson Scholarship for Spanish • $500 James Fonseca Scholarship for the study of Spanish or Esperanto • $500 Sister Éloise-Thérèse Scholarship for the study of languages other than Spanish or Esperanto

All eligible candidates are notified via university email each semester. If you have received an application, you are possibly eligible for membership in the Society. The Society and our campus chapter are anxious to enroll all eligible students but because the requirements are quite high, it is necessary for you to complete the application form and submit it along with a $30 membership fee by the due date included in the invitation email. If you are interested in becoming a member, please fill out the application found in the email and follow the instructions for applying and paying for membership. The Honor Society Committee will review and verify your qualification and notify you of your eligibility within a few weeks. More information on scholarships can be found on the Alpha Mu Gamma Website.
