Chemistry is Everywhere...
Chemistry is the central science. All of life depends upon intricate and coordinated chemicalreactions. All the materials of nature and those that are made by humans have propertiesarising from the details of their chemical structure, and on the properties of the elements, compounds and ions of which they are composed. A vast range of products developed in the20th century are based on chemistry and many new 21st century products will be based onchemistry such as batteries for electric vehicles, diagnostic kits for personalized medicine, andmany others. Solutions to many of the major problems facing humanity today are being soughtusing chemistry, such as those in areas of energy, healthcare, environmental sustainability, climate change, and resource usage.
Chemistry degree holders are sought for employment in many established industries such aspharmaceuticals, biotechnology, foods and beverages, cosmetics, consumer products, automotive, aerospace, basic materials, fuels and energy, agriculture, and environmentalprotection. Many chemistry degree holders are employed by government labs at the local, stateand national levels and for federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration,Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, National Air and Space Agency, and National Institutes of Health. Holders of bachelor’s degrees can meet the national need forqualified high school chemistry teachers, and those with advanced degrees can teach atcolleges and universities. Chemistry degree holders also work for crime labs and hospitals.Chemistry is also an excellent background for work in patent law and in regulatory affairs. Therate of acceptance of chemistry majors into medical schools and related health professions isamong the highest of all majors.
