UMSL hosted the Convergence Conference 2019 on March 26, 2019 sponsored by the St. Louis Operations Collective, comprised of representatives of the APICS-St. Louis Chapter, CSCMP, ISM, MML, NDTA, SLUL Center for Supply Chain Excellence, Transportation Club of St. Louis, and UMSL Center for Transportation Studies. Harrison Luvai successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation in Logistics and Supply Chain Management for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration. His dissertation is entitled “Containing Risk when Maximizing Supply Chain Performance”. His dissertation committee consisted Drs.  L. Douglas Smith (Chairperson),  Donald C. Sweeney II, Haitao Li, and Lorena Bearzotti (Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile).

PhD student Juan Zhang made a presentation on her research entitled “Economic and Environmental Impacts of Drone Delivery” to the University of Missouri Board of Curators at the Faculty Senate Breakfast with the Board of Curators on November 16, 2018.

Several UMSL faculty participated in the 2018 INFORMSmeeting in Phoenix in November 2018. Dr. James F. Campbell was a panelist in the Doctoral Student Colloquium andchaired an invited joint session on “Drones in Logistics”, Dr. Haitao Li made a presentation “Stochastic Single-machine Scheduling with Learning”, and Dr. Mitch Millstein was a co-author of the presentation “Utility Based Priority Scheduling Rules in Dynamic Job Shops with Customer Balking”.

The Supply Chain & Analytics Department, along with the Supply Chain & Transportation Club, sponsored a panel on November 1, 32018 of recent alums entitled What I Wish I Knew…!”. This featured Sarah Rizzo of Anheuser-Busch, Jeff Russ of Forsythe Advisors, Jim Lang of Ironhorse Resources, and Cassie Bianculli of Save-A-Lot.

Parimal Kulkarni successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation in Logistics and Supply Chain Management for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration. Her dissertation is entitled “Optimizing Healthcare Strategic Sourcing with Consideration of Physician Preference and Vendor Scorecards in the Supply Chain”. His dissertation committee consisted Drs. UMSL was well represented at the CSCMP EDGE Supply Chain Conference and the Academic Research Symposium in Nashville in September 2018. Dr. Mitch Millstein (shown above) chaired a panel entitled “Consulting to Create and Extend a Research Agenda”. Drs. Haitao Li and James Campbell were co-authors with Dr. Liu Yang (Purdue University, and UMSL PhD graduate) of the presentation “Optimizing Order Fulfillment Performance through Integrated Inventory Management”. The Supply Chain & Analytics Department and the Center for Transportation Studies, in conjunction with FAPRI (Food & Agriculture Policy Research Institute at Mizzou and the St. Louis Regional Freightway, hosted a day-long seminar on “Agriculture Markets & Supply Chains on September 20, 2018. This featured a presentation by Dr. Haitao Li (shown above), along with presentations from Mizzou faculty and an industry panel.

UMSL Supply Chain & Analytics student Marilyn Cifuentes was awarded the 2018-2019 John Grant Helm Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the St. Louis CSCMP (Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals) Roundtable. This award recognizes school performance, leadership and involvement in campus organizations, supply chain curriculum, career path, and internships. Marilyn is also the President of the UMSL Supply Chain Club!

The Transportation Research Forum (TRF) – St. Louis Chapter recently announced the winners of its first Student Paper Contest. This included a $500 first place prize to UMSL Supply Chain Management student   Jennifer Downey. Congratulations, Jennifer! Runner-up prizes were awarded to UMSL students   Rachel Bunjak,   Sarah Kienzle,   Jeffrey Reardon,   Alan McKay  and   Lauren Ervin. The Supply Chain & Analytics Department is very pleased to announce the addition of   Dr. Jill Bernard Bracy  and   Mike Edwards. Dr. Bernard Bracy is Assistant Teaching Professor and Interim Director of the Center for Transportation Studies. She has previously been teaching in the UMSL Marketing Department and a faculty member at Fontbonne University. Mr. Edwards was also previously teaching in the UMSL Marketing Department and he brings a wealth of experience in various executive management roles for logistics and the supply chain management

The 2017 INFORMS conference in October featured several presentations by UMSL faculty and doctoral students:  Dr. Andrea Cadenbach presented “New Results on Risk Attitudes in Operations Decisions”. Dr. James Campbell organized four session on Drone Delivery Systems and presented “Delivery with Trucks and Drones”. Dr. Qiaiohai (Joice) Hu presented “Subscription Selling: The Role of Consumer Valuation Uncertainty and Competition”. Dr. Haitao Li presented “A New Optimization Approach for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assignment and Scheduling” and “A Bilevel Programming Approach to Optimize Credit Term Decisions in Supply Chains”. Anthony Vatterott presented “A Multi-skill Approach to Property Maintenance Considering Spatial, Temporal and Resource Constraints”.

Dr. Mitch Millstein made a presentation at the CSCMP EDGE Supply Chain Conference in September 2017 entitled “Multi-Criteria Customer Evaluation in Aligning Sales, Finance and Supply Chain”. 4. Parimal Kulkarni, a PhD student in Logistics & Supply Chain Management was a participant in the Donald J. Bowersox Doctoral Symposium held in conjunction with the CSCMP Conference. Ms. Kulkarni was one of only 19 students selected for the Symposium and UMSL was one of only 14 universities represented.

Dr. James Campbell was a keynote speaker at the VIII International Workshop on Locational Analysis and Related Problems 2017 in Segovia, Spain. This meeting is organized by the Spanish Location Network and Location Group GELOCA (SEIO), and is funded by the Spanish Government. Dr. Campbell’s presentation was “Strategic design of drone delivery systems”.

Anheuser-Busch brought part of its supply chain team to UMSL on September 13, 2017 for a presentation in Anheuser-Busch Hall about opportunities in supply chain at AB. AB presenters included James Sembrot (SC&A Advisory Board member), Hannah Schute, Sarah Rizzo (SC&A alum), Tim Lu and Julie Hazel.

 The Supply Chain & Analytics Department welcomes three new full-time faculty this Fall.  Dr. Qiaohai (Joice) Hu received her PhD from Case Western Reserve University, and has  served on the faculty at Purdue University and City University of Hong Kong. Her research interests are interdisciplinary, including supply chain finance, the and interface between supply chain management, accounting, and marketing.  Dr. Matias Enz received his PhD from the Ohio State University and has taught at Cranfield University (England), and Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina. His research is focused on developing practical and theoretically sound solutions that address managers’ problems in supply chain relationship management, including cross-functional supply chain processes, measurement of supply chain performance, and value co-creation.  Maureen Karig received her MBA from Thunderbird, The School of Global Management and has been Senior Research Associate in the Center for Business and Industrial Studies, as well as an instructor for Supply Chain and Management courses at UMSL. She has extensive international business experience across export operations, global market intelligence, global customer service and international credit & collections, and is passionate about international trade.

  Dr. Andrea (Hupman) Cadenbach has been inducted into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2017. Dr. Hupman is recognized for her swimming accomplishments from  2004-08, when she was a 9-time all American and 2-time Big 10 champion. Learn more.

Software and algorithms developed by  Dr. Haitao Li  for resource allocation and task scheduling issues are moving towards commercialization! While initially targeted at problems in the construction industry, this technology has wider applicability. View the full story .  

In the recent UMSL Graduate Research Fair, PhD student Juan Zhang won 3rd place and $200 in Social Sciences, Humanities, and Business for her poster “Strategic Design for Delivery with Trucks and Drones”. Zhang’s advisors for the research were Drs. Don Sweeney and James Campbell.

Our recent PhD graduate Dr. Aldis Jakubovskis  is actively publishing work from his dissertation, including: “Strategic facility location, capacity acquisition, and technology choice decisions under demand uncertainty: Robust vs. non-robust optimization approaches”, in  European Journal of Operational Research 260 (2017) 1095–1104 – and “Flexible production resources and capacity utilization rates: A robust optimization perspective”, in  International Journal of Production Economics 189 (2017).

 The UMSL Supply Chain Club organized a fantastic tour on April 12, 2017 of Monsanto’s Research Facility, hosted by Mark Deadwyler (member of the Supply Chain & Analytics Department Advisory Board), and including several UMSL alums working at Monsanto.

The Logistics & Operations Management Department has been renamed the Supply Chain & Analytics Department to better reflect our broad scope all across the supply chain and our continuing focus on analytics for better decision-making.

Liang Xu, PhD received his doctorate in Business Administration from the Logistics & Supply Chain Management program in December 2016. His dissertation is entitled “Synthesis of Optimization and Simulation for Multi-Period Supply Chain Planning with Consideration of Risks”. Dr. Xu’s dissertation advisory committee consisted of Drs. L. Douglas Smith (chair), and Drs. Donald C. Sweeney, Haitao Li, and Lorena Bearzotti. Dr. Xu is Assistant Professor in the College of Business at Slippery Rock University.

UMSL faculty made two presentations at the CSCMP Educator’s Conference in Orlando, Florida in September 2016. Dr. Mitch Millstein presented “Omni-channel Warehouse Location with Competition: Application to a US Sporting Goods Retailer” and Dr. James F. Campbell presented “Strategic Design for Delivery with Trucks and Drones”. The first of these is collaborative research of Drs. Millstein and Campbell. The second of these is collaborative research of Dr. Campbell, Dr. Donald C. Sweeney II, and Ph.D. student Juan Zhang.

Dr. Vicki Bier, Professor and Chair of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, will make a presentation entitled “ Computational Challenges in Network-Interdiction Models” on April 29, 2016 from 1:30 – 2:30 pm in 401 SSB (Social Science and Business Building) as part of the College’s Logistics & Supply Chain Management Doctoral Seminar Series.  This seminar is at the intersection of statistical analysis, game theory, networks and homeland security.

Dr. James F. Campbell, Professor and Chair, Logistics & Operations Management Department was named Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, which is widely regard as one of the elite journals for transportation research. Campbell has been on the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal since 1991 and also serves as Associate Editor for Transportation Science and for OMEGA - The International Journal of Management Science.

Dr. Solomon is Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management at Sam Houston State University.

On November 10, 2015 members of the College’s Transportation Club toured the facilities of Unyson Logistics (part of Hub Group), a major 3PL based in St. Louis. Dr. Jan Ehmke from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany made a presentation on November 6, 2015 in the College’s Logistics & Supply Chain Management Doctoral Seminar Series entitled “ Intelligent Urban Transportation – Making Last-Mile Deliveries more Efficient and Reliable”.

Dr. Keith Womer is the recipient of the 2015 J. Steinhardt Prize from the INFORMS Military Applications Society. This is awarded for “outstanding contributions to Military Operations Research” and “career accomplishments in practicing or managing military operations research”.
The award is sponsored by the CNA Corporation and will be presented at the Philadelphia INFORMS meeting in November 2015. 

Dr. Haitao Li is the recipient of the 2015 Doug Durand Award for Research Excellence. This is based on research for the most recent two year period, during which Dr. Li had four refereed journal articles published or accepted, two book chapters published, five grants totaling $313,000, one patent application and two invention disclosures.

Dr. Mary Lacity, Curators’ Professor of Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at UM-St. Louis and Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics made a presentation on October 2, 2015 in the College’s Logistics & Supply Chain Management Doctoral Seminar Series entitled “ Nine Keys to World-class Business Process Outsourcing”.

Dr. Sibel Alumur from the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo made a presentation on September 18, 2015 in the College of Business Administration’s Logistics & Supply Chain Management Doctoral Seminar Series entitled The Design of Capacitated Intermodal Hub Networks with Different Vehicle Types”.

Dr. David Ronen was named Founder’s Professor in 2015.

 PhD received her doctorate in Business Administration from the Logistics & Supply Chain Management program in August 2105. Her dissertation is entitled “ An Investigation into the Benefits of using Data Analytics to Examine Missouri Motor Vehicle Crash Severity Outcomes ”.  Dr. Bernard’s dissertation advisory committee consisted of Drs.   Donald C. Sweeney II (chair), L. Douglas Smith, Ray Mundy, and Daniel Rust.

Dr. Haitao Li, Associate Professor of Logistics & Operations Management, was named Faculty Inventor of the Year by the National Academy of Inventors during Research & Innovation Week April 17-24 at UMSL.

Dr. Haitao Li, Associate Professor of Logistics & Operations Management, was named Faculty Inventor of the Year by the National Academy of Inventors during Research & Innovation Week April 17-24 at UMSL. This award is given for innovative research with significant commercial potential. Li research combines optimization, statistics and artificial intelligence to solve large-scale optimization problems under uncertainty, especially for project scheduling problems with limited resources and uncertain task durations. Li currently has a U.S. patent pending, two provisional patents and several invention disclosures. Campbell, Robert M. Nauss, and Donald C. Sweeney II.

Dr. Robert Nauss was named Founder’s Professor in 2015.
