Personal Belongings

Visitors can only bring items necessary for research into the reading room, including silenced electronic devices (phones, laptops, tablets, etc.), notebooks, loose paper, and pencils. Other items must be stored in the locker provided, including bags, food and drinks, coats, umbrellas, and pens.

Using the Materials

Collections are available to researchers unless they are limited by contractual restrictions or physical condition, including fragile historic newspapers. Staff members can assist with turning fragile pages or unfolding maps.

Researchers are limited to one box or item on their study desk at a time. Maintain the order of items in a folder and folders in a box. Paper, pencils, foam book cradles, page supports, and gloves will be provided if necessary.

Staff reserve the right to deny access to any materials due to condition. We ask that researchers report any damages they identify.

Photography and Reproductions

Visitors can take pictures of non-restricted materials with their phones or other digital cameras. Flash photography and photographing other researchers is prohibited. Curators reserve the right to restrict photography at any time.

Materials can be scanned upon request. Staff reserve the right to restrict reproductions based on the condition of the materials and staff time. Reproductions may be subject to copyright.

For professional reproduction services, see our imaging policies and fees.
