P-11: William F. and Betty Streckfus Carroll Collection, Series 1-2

Introduction and Arrangement

The Captain William F. and Betty Streckfus Carroll Collection at the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library contains papers, photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, river charts, vessel blueprints and scrapbooks which were the personal research of Captain William F. Carroll, with assistance from his wife, Betty Streckfus Carroll. Most of the collection is focused around the Streckfus Steamers Company, an excursion Steamboat business that ran for over 100 years in different incarnations, including the ACME Packet, the Streckfus Steamers Line Company, and Streckfus Steamers Incorporated. In addition, the collection contains records pertaining to post-Streckfus incarnations of the company; the Connelly Group, Gateway Clipper Incorporated, the Mississippi Riverboat Company, and President Associates. The collection further includes photographs, papers, ephemera, blueprints, correspondence, notes and clippings pertaining to the Streckfus and Carroll families, other inland river vessels, river related companies, and general river lore, life and heritage. The materials collected by Captain Carroll and Betty Streckfus Carroll date from before the 1920s to the early 1990s and include many rare items and artifacts from the Streckfus Steamers Company.

The collection consists of 130 half-size Hollinger boxes, 10 oversize boxes, 14 monographs and 18 scrapbooks, totaling 91 linear feet. It is subdivided in to the following series:

Series 1: Streckfus Steamers Incorporated

The first series consists of records related to Streckfus Steamers Incorporated, the longest-running Streckfus company. The series consists of about 20.5 linear feet – boxes 1 through 29, as well as boxes 1-4-1 to 1-4-5 (the personnel files), and 11 unbound volumes of minutes and accounting ledgers.

Subseries 1-1 (Financial Records) contains financial and bookkeeping ledgers and documents, income statements, financial statements from the years 1929 – 1987, annual recap reports from the 1960s to the 1970s, accountant’s reports from the years 1926 – 1983, minutes meetings, stockholder information and tax information. Correspondence has been included in folders where appropriate.

Subseries 1-2 (Business Records) contains records important to the operation of Streckfus Steamers Incorporated including accident reports, certifications, licenses and registrations, station bills and drills, schedules, and court cases involving Streckfus Steamers.

Subseries 1-3 (Correspondence) includes business correspondence as well as personal correspondence. Because Streckfus Steamers Incorporated was a family business, it has not always been possible to separate personal and business correspondence. In such cases, correspondence has been filed with business correspondence. In addition, there is a sub-subseries of correspondence related to ICC correspondence. All correspondence has been filed by year, or in some cases by month and year. In addition, the following correspondence was found foldered together, and has been left so; 1955 New Orleans Dock Board Letters, 1959 – 1961 Bridge Clearances, 1960 – 1965 Poplar Street Bridge, 1975 – 1981 St. Louis Port Authority, and 1980 Board of Directors.

Subseries 1-4 (Personnel Records) includes index cards with information regarding former employees of Streckfus Steamers Incorporated. Typically, cards include the employee’s name, contact information, dates of employment and some cases, job title. Dates on the cards in most cases range from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Subseries 1-5 (Miscellaneous Streckfus Records) includes records that would not fit into any of sub-series 1 through 4. Sub-series 1-5 is contained in box 29.
