M-727: Frank Posegate Civil War Collection

CREATOR: Posegate, Frank

EXTENT: 0.5 linear feet

HISTORY: Frank Posegate was a Union Army Lieutenant and Captain of the 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A during the Civil War, as well as a journalist and politician in St. Joseph, Missouri. He owned and edited the St. Joseph Weekly West and Daily West newspapers. Following the Civil War, Posegate served as Postmaster of St. Joseph from 1877-1881 and mayor from 1882-1884. 

SCOPE: This collection comprises the personal and military records of Frank Posegate, as well as miscellaneous items from St. Joseph, Missouri, where Posegate lived before and after the Civil War. A nonexhaustive list of subjects and materials includes:

  • Handwritten note from Posegate to his wife, Sallie Posegate, in April 1862
  • Typescript narrative of Posegate's military and journalistic experience
  • [RESTRICTED] Veteran and pension records from the National Archives and Records Association
  • Manuscript letters to and from Posegate during his time with the 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, including correspondence about soldier pay rolls, volunteer recruitment, supplies, Posegate's discharge, and more
  • Commission proceedings for a mutiny case
  • Photographs from St. Joseph Missouri

ACCESS: This is collection M-727. This collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the collection may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, depending on condition. Researchers are advised to call ahead concerning changes in hours due to University intersessions and holidays. The St. Louis Mercantile Library is located on levels one and two of the Thomas Jefferson Library building.
