SCOPE: This collection documents the print communication networks of LGBTQ+ people, primarily gay men, before the internet and popularization of digital communication and online communities. Item types include magazines with directories and personal ads, handbills advertising events and establishments, correspondence from gay clubs and societies, and other print materials. Most items were produced from 1970-1990 in San Francisco, California, but the collection spans the United States, including Florida, Ohio, Colorado, New York, Washington D.C., and more.
ACCESS: This is collection M-725. This collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the collection may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, depending on condition. Researchers are advised to call ahead concerning changes in hours due to University intersessions and holidays. The St. Louis Mercantile Library is located on levels one and two of the Thomas Jefferson Library building.
