SCOPE: The collection spans the entire history of the St. Louis MCA, in the 1950s and 1960s especially, and covers in detail the broad range of urban policy issues that were intended to facilitate civic improvement through its endeavors and advocacy.

EXTENT: ~400 record center boxes of archival material.

HISTORY & PROVENANCE: The Model Cities Association program worked to promote community revitalization through awareness and assessment concerning such issues as improved housing, employment, recreation and other factors crucial to the improvement of the quality of urban life. The program existed in many large American urban centers, St. Louis having a particularly active bureau. The archives for St. Louis were transferred to the Mercantile Library in 1992.

ACCESS: This collection is currently being processed. Please contact the staff in advance of your visit to coordinate access to these materials for research purposes.

When available, this collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the material in Special Collection M-151 may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, subject to condition. For collections marked limited access, researchers are advised to contact the library at least three business days in advance of their visit to submit a request to view the physical material.

Researchers are advised to call ahead concerning changes in hours due to University intersessions and holidays. The St. Louis Mercantile Library is located on levels one and two of the Thomas Jefferson Library building.

In observance of security procedures, certain services may not be available shortly before the daily closing time.
