China Study Tour

The purpose of the study tour is to explore and appreciate the business and cultural environment of China, to gain a deeper understanding of how business people do business in China, to meet with Chinese leaders of government, business, and educators, and to have cultural experiences in a Chinese environment.

Participants of the two-week study tour will travel to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai to study the business and cultural environment of these cities. Students will stay in 3-star hotels with a roommate of the same gender (i.e. 2 students per room).

The trip includes visits to the Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City and a variety of museums.

Dates: (PLEASE NOTE: This program alternates summers with the Japan Study Tour. It will run again in Summer 2011. New dates and prices will be posted in November). Please refer to the below information as a reference of approximate dates and prices from previous years.


May 24 (depart for Beijing) - June 9, 2009.
Students will fly into Beijing and fly out of Shanghai. Participants are responsible for their own airfare.

Estimated Costs:
Educational Fees: $773.40 (3 credits. 2008 rate; summer 2009 rate TBA in April.)
OR Non-Credit fee of $650*

Program Fee*: $1800
Airfare estimate: $1,650
Personal Expenses: $500 (depends on personal habits)

*includes housing--double occupancy—in Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai, all meals, transportation within China, entrance fees, lectures and company and factory visits, visits to historical sites, visas for entrance to China, medical insurance, textbooks; does not include roundtrip airfare (St. Louis-Beijing, Shanghai-St. Louis), passport costs, and personal expenses.

* UMSL reserves the right to revise the program fee if there are fluctuations in the exchange rate.  Participants are responsible for any increase in rates.

Application Process:
Students will need to submit the following documents to the Study Abroad Office. Forms are available online or in the Study Abroad Office, 261 MSC. Application and non-refundable deposit of $500 are due by February 23, 2009. Additional documents and remaining program fee ($1300) are due by March 6, 2009. Tuition ONLY may be billed to your UMSL student account; the program fees are payable by check or money order.

Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation:
All UM-St. Louis students who study abroad are required to attend pre-departure orientation. This session will cover registration and financial aid, credit transfer, travel, health and safety topics, culture shock, and much more. Details and location.
