Abstract:
The Henry H. Benham Papers include the papers of Major Henry Hill Benham, his wife Anne Franchot, and his parents, Brig. Gen. Henry W. and Elizabeth A. Benham. The bulk of the papers encompass the military career of Maj. Henry H. Benham, especially matters pertaining to service records, commissions, recommendations, appointments, and general orders that span his career from 1875 to 1907. In particular, the papers are strongly representative of Maj. Benham’s duty during the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico and Cuba (1898-99). Additionally, the collection contains Maj. Benham’s personal uniform insignia, medals, and regalia, postcards from his European vacation, and family genealogical data. The papers related to Brig. Gen. Benham contain biographical materials, his last will and testament, and books related to his military career. Aside from the papers of military and personal interest, the collection contains military portraits of the Benhams, photographs of military life, and portraits of family members. The Henry H. Benham Papers are of value to students of military history, the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and family history from the nineteenth through the early twentieth century.

However, the bulk of the collection encompasses the military career of Maj. Henry H. Benham from 1875-1907. The collection consists of 9 legal sized boxes and one oversized box. It is divided into five series and contains 81 folders.
