Orders of protection (commonly referred to as restraining orders) are legal orders, put in place by a judge that restricts or limits the amount of contact a person can have with another person. There are different types of protection orders depending on the nature of the violence or harassment and the relationship between people. Generally, they can help by ordering the perpetrator to:
- Stop doing violent, threatening or harassing acts
- Stay away from you at home, work, school or other places you go
- Stop contacting you, or harassing you in person, by mail, email, phone or through a third party.
If you have an order of protection, or if you become aware of a violation of an order of protection, we ask that you immediately inform Campus Police so that they have it on record. To do so, please call (314) 516-5155 or stop into the Campus Police station. The Campus Police consider this to be a matter of high importance and will enforce the provisions of an authorized order of protection according to the criminal statues pertaining to such. Note: though orders of protection may reference specific areas of the university (e.g., campus residence halls/apartments, classrooms, work spaces, etc.), these orders can only be enforced by Campus Police.

In addition to obtaining an order of protection, the university also encourages individuals who are fearful for their safety to:
- Prevent the release of your directory information using MyView. This will prevent the university from releasing directory information/public information (e.g., name, phone number, email address, enrollment status, major, participation in recognized sports and activities, dates of attendance) without the student’s prior consent. The Registration Office, (314) 516-5545 can offer assistance if the student cannot figure it out.
- Ensure that all social media sites you use only have limited information and are set to private.
