P-133: Memorandum of a Keel Boat Sale

ABSTRACT:  Memorandum of the agreement between Abner McCourtnay and Hubbard & Hertich regarding the sale of a keel boat. 

SCOPE: This 1812 memorandum establishes the terms of Abner McCourtnay’s sale of a keel boat to Hubbard & Hertich in exchange for lead, whiskey, and linen. Both parties are from Ste. Genevieve, Upper Louisiana Territory, present-day Missouri. 

HISTORY: Keel boats were a type of river boat used primarily in the 18th and early 19th centuries. They had a keel, or a vertical structure extending from the underside of the hull, and were propelled by a combination of a sails, oars, and poles.
