M-716: Cabinet Card Photograph of a 19th Century St. Louis Tavern

DATES: Ca. 1890

CREATOR: Baker

EXTENT: One file folder

SCOPE: This collection contains a cabinet card photograph mounted on tan card mount, including a verso with “BAKER / THE PHOTOGRAPHER, / 504 S. GARRISON AVE., / ST. LOUIS, MO.” The photograph shows the exterior of Ernst Eckert’s Seven Mile House Saloon on St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis County, Missouri, ca. 1890. Despite its age, the photograph is remarkably clear; so clear, in fact, that the sign of the tavern is legible, as is the small hanging metal sign near the door advertising a now-defunct St. Louis City brewery, “Brinkwith / Nolker / Lager / Beer.” Ernst Eckert’s Seven Mile House Saloon was an early public house of note to early westward expansion because the section of St. Charles Rock Road it lay upon was part of the “National Road” west.
