M-708: Civil War Era Muster Roll, Illinois Infantry Volunteers

SCOPE: This collection contains a muster roll from the 1860s. A muster roll is a list of individuals in a group, in this case the Illinois Infantry Volunteers, to keep track of rank, attendance, etc. A transcription of the top three lines:

“Muster – On Roll of Captain Geo W. Jenks I 0/11 F in the 32nd Regiment, Illinois Infty Volunteers commanded by Colonel John Logan. Called into the Service of the United States by the President thereof from the Thirty-first day of December 1861 (date of first Muster) for the term of three years unless sooner discharged.”

This muster roll contains information for Townsend Smith, David Glenn, and Troy Moore, including their ranks, ages, when they joined, where they joined, and who enrolled them in this Infantry division. The muster roll was signed by Capt. Smith Townsend and Gerald Russell, the mustering officer, on June 17th, 1863, at a station near Vicksburg, Missouri.
