M-700: St. Louis Victorian-Era Photograph Album

DATES: 1895-1920s

CREATOR: Unknown

EXTENT: one approximately 15” x 11” x 2” photo album

SCOPE: This collection contains 185 black and white or sepia toned photographs, most of which are about 5” x 4,” held inside 26 card leaves with rectangular openings. The photo album is black cloth over boards with the word “Photographs” stamped in the upper left corner of the cover in silver.

The photos in this collection are mostly of St. Louis and its surrounding areas during the turn of the 20th century. Although there is almost no notation for these photos, visible clues, including scenes from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, suggest that these photos were taken chiefly from 1895-1905. There are ten or so prints toward the end of the album that are older and venture into the 1920s. Scenes from the photos include family shots, Forest Park, Tower Grove Park, the Bixby Mansion, a steamboat race, and others in Victorian-Era St. Louis.
