SCOPE: The collection spans the nineteenth century, including minutes and annual reports. The collection holds significant documentary material for Civil War studies focused on the homefront, and for genealogists and historians of early American charitable institutions.

Special Collection M-142 is accessible through a container list inventory on site. Much of the material exists on microfilm in the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection in the Thomas Jefferson Library building

EXTENT: 15 linear feet of archivally boxed material.

HISTORY & PROVENANCE: Founded in the first half of the nineteenth century in St. Louis by prominent citizens, this early orphanage has grown into an exemplary and historic children's residence and shelter. The Edgewood center donated its holdings of early records to the Mercantile Library in 1992.

ACCESS: This collection is available for on-site use only in the Rare Book and Manuscripts Reading Room. Some of the material in Special Collection M-142 may be photocopied, digitally scanned or photographed, subject to condition. For collections marked limited access, researchers are advised to contact the library at least three business days in advance of their visit to submit a request to view the physical material.

Researchers are advised to call ahead concerning changes in hours due to University intersessions and holidays. The St. Louis Mercantile Library is located on levels one and two of the Thomas Jefferson Library building.
