Biographical Note: Karyn Witmer-Gow is an author of romantic novels. Originally from Niagara Falls, New York, she earned an education degree from State University College in Geneseo, Mississippi and a master’s degree from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. Returning home, she worked twelve years as an Art teacher in a local high school until she relocated to St. Louis with her husband. Interested in writing from a young age, she completed her first historical novel at the age of fifteen.
Living and working in St. Louis, she published twelve books under the pen names Elizabeth Kary, Elizabeth Grayson, and Karen Witmer between 1985 and 2006. Published in 1986, her second book, Love, Honor, and Betray, garnered her critical acclaim and launched her career as an eminent romance novelist. In 2005, her eleventh book, Moon in the Water, was a finalist for the Romance writers RITA award and the Willa Cather Literary Award.
Situating her novels in the historical past, Witmer is known for her thoroughly researched and accurate depictions of historical settings, places, and events. Utilizing the archives at the St. Louis Mercantile Library, she crafted romances that took place during the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the settlement of the American frontier. Of significant local interest, her novel Let No Man Divide was situated in St. Louis during the Civil War, and another novel, Bride of the Wilderness, was situated in Ste. Genevieve in 1774.
