M-333: Sewing Arts Collection Finding Aid

Biographical Note

E.E. Hoover served in the Women’s Army Corp and then taught as a home economics teacher.  The items within this collection were compiled during this time.

The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction was created by Edna Bryte Bishop (born Annie Edna Plance) from McDonald, Pennsylvania.  Mrs. Bishop attended Teachers’ College, Columbia University, and Boston University.  While attending school, she worked as a fitter for McCreery in New York City and then for Kaufman in Pittsburgh, PA where she was in charge of alterations.

From 1917 until 1927, Mrs. Bishop trained teachers in simple sewing techniques, as an associate professor at Syracuse University.  In 1927, she became the Fashion Director of twelve clinics at the Amos Parrish Fashion Clinic of New York City.  From there Mrs. Bishop spent the 1930s working for the Schiaparelli House of Fashion Design in London and Paris.  Returning to McDonald, PA in 1942, she married Charles Bishop.

The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction was first made available in print under the sponsorship of J.C. Penney Company in 1948.  The Bishop Method moved into university, college and home economics classrooms in 1952 and 1953, when J.C. Penney then published educational booklets on the Bishop Method.

Mrs. Bishop was appointed the Educational Director at the Advanced Pattern Company, Inc. in 1953.  In this position she was charged with coordinating the educational activities of the company and supervised the creation of a new series of teaching aides and sewing techniques for home economics teachers and 4-H readers.

In 1959, the first Bishop Method of Clothing Construction book was published (revised in 1966).  The third book on the Bishop Method, Fashion Sewing by the Bishop Method, was published in 1966.

The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction was acclaimed nation-wide as a method of sewing that made homemade clothes look tailored made.  In 1966, Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) reported in, “The Second Lady Sews,” that the wife of the 38th vice-president, Mrs. Muriel Humphrey, endorsed the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction because “it teaches basic construction and understanding of materials…something beginners are tempted to skip”.

The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction is a sewing method that teaches fit according to the grain line.  Students often used fabrics where the grain line was easily visible (such as woven, checked, and Gingham fabrics) so it was easy to adjust the fit when the fabric was pulled off-grain.  There are five features of the Bishop Method:

  • Unit Construction: A method of assembling the section of a garment that makes a unit and completing all stitching and pressing before each unit is joined together.
  • Stay Stitching: A technique that allows for aligning the grain line – a line of straight stitches that prevents curved or bias edges from stretching out of shape. This process was introduced by Edna Bryte Bishop.
  • Staystich Plus: A manipulation of the fabric with a machine stitch to force together the grain threads to gain control of ease.
  • Understitching: A row of machine stitches placed close to the seam edges on the under sections that catch both seam allowances, preventing rolling to the outside of the garment.
  • Lockstitching: A technique that involves knotting the machine thread at the beginning and end of a line of stitching by releasing the pressure foot and stitching several times in the same stitch. This eliminates bulk stitching with the reverse stitch.

Collection Scope

Consists of printed patterns from six pattern making companies: Advance Pattern Company, Inc., Butterick Pattern Service, The McCall Pattern Company, New York Pattern Company, Simplicity Pattern Company, Inc. and Vogue Pattern Service.  This collection also contains homemade patterns, stencils, and transfers.  The booklets and books published on the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction can be found within the contents of this collection in addition to instruction samples and trims and swatches.

Content Note and Series Arrangement

This collection is arranged in seven series.

Series 1: Patterns

Series 1 contains printed patterns from six pattern making companies and homemade newspaper patterns.  The dates of these patterns range from 1937 to 1988.  The average size of the patterns is a Misses’ 14.  All patterns are for women’s clothing and most patterns are for skirts and dresses.  Patterns are arranged first in alphabetical order by company, then by envelope layout and then by pattern number.  This series contains eight subseries.  The contents of subseries 1-5 and 7 are not held in folders; these are loose items that are arranged in columns (left column first).  The contents of subseries 6 and 8 are in folders that follow the pattern envelopes.

  • Subseries 1: Advance®. Dates are not available on most Advance® patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on sizing changes that occurred in 1956 and 1967, the design of the envelope and the design of the clothing. Patterns are dated from 1956-1964 and range in size from 12-20. There are thirty-two patterns in this subseries. Three patterns are identified as Bishop Method construction. One pattern is based on a design of Loretta Young.
  • Subseries 2: Butterick. Dates are not available on most Butterick patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on sizing changes that occurred in 1956 and 1967, the design of the envelope and the design of the clothing. Patterns are dated from 1960 to 1988 and range in size from 10-14. There are twenty patterns in this subseries. Four patterns are designs by Mary Quant, Rena Rowan of JONES NEW YORK, Chrisse Evert and Marie Osmond.
  • Subseries 3: McCall’s. The McCall Pattern Company provides copyright dates on all its patterns. Patterns range from 1937 to 1979 and range in size from demo 9/10 to 14/16. There are fifty-five patterns in this subseries. There are three patterns from McCall’s New York Designers’ Collection including one by Anne Klein, Donald Brooks and Bill Blass. There is one pattern designed by Marlo Thomas.
  • Subseries 4: New York Pattern. Dates are not available on most New York Pattern patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on sizing changes that occurred in 1956 and 1967, the design of the envelope and the design of the clothing. There is one pattern in this subseries, dated between 1950 and 1959 and is a size large.
  • Subseries 5: Simplicity. Dates are not available on many early Simplicity patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on sizing changes that occurred in 1956 and 1967, the design of the envelope and the design of the clothing, unless they contained a copyright date. Patterns are dated from 1950-1979 and range in size from demo size to 15. There are thirty-one patterns in this subseries. One pattern is a teaching pattern (demo size) and uses Unit Construction.
  • Subseries 6: Quick-Makes of INDIAN HEAD Cotton. Dates are not available on Quick-Makes of INDIAN HEAD Cotton patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on the design of the clothing. There is one pattern in this subseries, dated between 1950 and 1979. No size is available.
  • Subseries 7: Vogue. Dates are not available on most Vogue patterns. Dates listed are best estimates based on sizing changes that occurred in 1956 and 1967, the design of the envelope and the design of the clothing. Patterns are dated from 1961-1979 and range in size from 12 to 14.
  • Subseries 8: Hand-made/newspaper pattern. This subseries contains homemade newspaper patterns.  Dates are unknown. There are 8 pattern pieces within this subseries.

Series 2: Stencils

Series 2 contains cardboard stencils. There are fourteen stencils total in this series. It contains pieces for making a house with a doormat and shutters, a small, medium and large pine tree, a cat, rooster, Santa Claus, Christmas tree and a girl and boy holding hands.

Series 3: Transfers

Series 3 contains transfers on parchment paper. Each image can be transferred to material using an iron and from there cut into pattern pieces for further construction or used as a pattern for hand-stitching the image.  The transfers have been divided into four subseries based on the images they contain.

  • Subseries 1: Flower Transfers. Contains a flower transfer on tissue paper from Simplicity pattern #3834 and three transfers with images of a variety of flowers including roses, pansies, and lilacs.
  • Subseries 2: Cartoon animals/children’s Transfers. Contains two transfers with images of baby cartoon animals and other juvenile cartoons including a giraffe toy pattern and images of a baby donkey.
  • Subseries 3: Images for Kitchen Chores. Contains two transfers, one with images of snails doing kitchen chores with days of the week listed and one with a little girl doing chores.
  • Subseries 4: Misc. images. Contains three transfers with a variety of images, ranging from playful puppies and kittens to acorn motifs, pheasant hunting scenes, flower sprays, grapes and baskets, etc.

Series 4: Sewing Construction Educational Publications

Series 4 contains the booklets and books published on the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction.  The educational booklets were published by the J.C. Penney Company and the Advance Pattern Company, Inc. and the books were published by the J.B. Lippincott Company.   Due to the size of one of the booklets, Basic Sewing: Step-by-Step, it is in Box 3.

  • Subseries 1: Booklets. Subseries 1 contains three copies of the 1952 booklet, Clothing Construction      Methods developed by Edna Bryte Bishop as well as the 1953 edition.  It also contains two copies of the 1957 booklet, The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction, as well as The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction (1955) and the Basic Sewing: Step-by-Step (1961) booklets by Edna Bryte Bishop.
  • Subseries 2: Books. Subseries 2 contains four books on the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction,    The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction (1959) by Edna Bryte Bishop and Marjorie Stotler Arch and its revised 1966 edition.  As well as the Fashion Sewing by the Bishop Method (1962) by Edna Bryte Bishop and Marjorie Stotler Arch and the Super Sewing: The New Bishop/Arch Book (1974) by Edna Bryte Bishop and Marjorie Arch Burns

Series 5: Periodicals

Series 5 contains one periodical: The Sewing Machine Advance, no. 10, vol. 4, October 1882, pp: 183-206.  Due to the length of this periodical, it is in Box 3.
