Silas Bent [Junior] Biography

Silas Bent was born on May 16, 1768, in Rutland, Massachusetts. He was the son of Silas Bent (1744-1818) and Mary Carter (1747-1831). Bent studied law with Philip Dodridge in Wheeling, West Virginia, before securing a job in 1800 as a census taker. His next job was postmaster for the Brooke Courthouse, Virginia, and occurred in 1802. From there, Bent went to Ohio where he earned a patent for an improved water wheel. (1) Under Rufus Putnam, Bent became a deputy surveyor in 1803. In 1804 he was appointed an Associate Judge of Washington County, Ohio. A year later, Bent was appointed to become the "Principle Deputy Surveyor of Louisiana" as he lacked the corrupt, inside political connections of the other candidates already in the region.(2) After arriving in Saint Louis in 1807, Bent was appointed the "first judge of court of common pleas."(3) While signing the charter for Saint Louis in 1809, Bent also became the "presiding judge of St. Louis Court of Common Pleas."(1) In 1811 Bent became a "Judge of the Courts of Common Pleas, and Courts of Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the District of St. Louis." He later became a Supreme Court Judge of the Missouri Territories from 1813 until Missouri's annexation into the union in 1821. (1) Bent died in 1821.

Silas Bent married Martha Kerr (1778-1833) of Virginia, and they had 11 children: Charles (1799-1847), Juliannah (1801-1820), John (1803-1845), Lucy (1805-1871), Dorcas (1807-1888), William W. (1809-1869), Mary (1811-1866), George (1814-1846), Robert (1816-1841), Edward (1818-1824), Silas (1820-1887).
