ABSTRACT: A color illustration of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) cars, originally on the outside of a hat box, c. 1830.
SCOPE: This illustration depicts three B&O freight cars with the text “Balt.” “And.” “Ohio.” written on the sides of the cars, and two people on top of the cars. The background is cerulean, and the cars, freight, and people are shades of brown and green. The cars are based on British "coal jimmies," which were converted to general freight cars. This is an early example of railroad imagery in commercial printing.
