ABSTRACT: Collection of books, photographs, and scrapbooks related to the Perlman family and Alfred E. Perlman’s career as a railroad engineer and executive.
SCOPE: This collection is divided into five series: books, photograph albums, scrapbooks, framed photographs, and loose items, dated 1919-1983. Subjects include railroad operations, history, and commerce; and the Perlman family and Perlman Yard.
HISTORY: Alfred E. Perlman (1902-1983) was an engineer and executive with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (1936-1954), New York and Penn Central Railroads (1954-1970), and Western Pacific Railroad (1970-1976). In the early 1950s, Perlman contributed to protecting the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad from bankruptcy and was then hired by the New York Central Railroad in 1954, which merged with the Penn Central Railroad under his presidency. Perlman was president and later chairman of the Western Pacific Railroad from 1970-1976 until his retirement.
