Melinda (Mindy) Bier, Ph.D., is the Theresa M. Fischer Professor of Citizenship Education and Co-Director of the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Center for Character and Citizenship (CCC). With support from the Kern Family Foundation, John Templeton Foundation, and Templeton World Charities Foundation, Bier has been investigating a virtue-based model of servant leadership that promotes the health and healing of adults and children in schools. Bier is co-author of What Works in Character Education (WWCE), an ongoing series of interdisciplinary literature reviews aimed at establishing an evidence base for the practice of character education in K-12 schools. WWCE findings have been translated into models of professional development and graduate school courses. Bier and a group of international colleagues have been investigating how implementation expertise and cultural adaptation of this programming can be effectively supported and assessed.
