Dr. Travers received his doctoral degree in 1967 from the George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. That same year, Dr. Travers was hired at the University of Missouri-St Louis, where he taught until his retirement in 2002. He continued to teach for UMSL for two more years. Dr. Travers teaching specialty was the History of Education, both Western and American. Dr. Travers co-authored a textbook with Dr. Ronald Rebore, Foundations of Education: Becoming a Teacher. Between 1985 and 2005 this text went through four editions, the first two published by Prentice-Hall and the last two by Allyn and Bacon.
