Program Description
Residents in our program will strengthen their pediatric exam skills and learn to diagnose and manage pediatric visual and ocular conditions in a hospital-based setting. They will also receive training in pediatric patients with complex medical diagnoses, pediatric ophthalmology with an intraocular and strabismus focus, pediatric contact lens fitting, and providing eye care to children with special needs. Residents will have the opportunity to co-manage patients with pediatric ophthalmologists as well as other subspecialty ophthalmologists. They will also learn to collaborate and consult with other healthcare providers across the academic medical center.
Program Mission
The Pediatric Optometry Residency Program at Children’s National Hospital provides advanced clinical training in pediatric eye care. We will train competent and compassionate optometrists who provide high-quality, evidence-based pediatric eye care and are prepared for a career in a private practice or academic setting.
Clinical Curriculum
The resident will have clinic four and a half days per week. Direct pediatric patient care for the residents will be prioritized in these clinics. Residents will spend most of their clinic time at the main campus at Children’s National Hospital with additional time at our ancillary clinics in PG county, Shady Grove, Chevy Chase, and Fairfax. The resident will have the opportunity, if desired, to volunteer at free clinics through the Prevention of Blindness Society and participate in international work through Little Eyes International. The resident will also have the opportunity to observe subspecialty pediatric ophthalmology clinics, including oculoplastics and retina. The resident will be educated on and directly involved in aphakic contact lens fitting and will graduate with competency in this skill.
Academic Curriculum
The resident will have one half-day per week for academic and administrative responsibilities.
The resident will be expected to attending the following events:
- Bimonthly pediatric ophthalmology journal club
- Bimonthly pediatric optometry didactics
- Monthly pediatric ophthalmology Grand Rounds
- Monthly NIH/CNH/GWU combined Ophthalmology Grand Rounds
- Fellow and fellow lectures pertaining to pediatric ophthalmology
- Biannual Visiting Professorships in Pediatric Ophthalmology
The resident will be strongly encouraged to attend the American Academy of Optometry meeting. They are also encouraged to attend continuing education activities offered by the Children’s National Hospital.
The resident will be required to keep a patient and academic activity log. The resident will also be required to write a paper based on original research, literature review, or a clinical case or case series suitable for publication in a referred ophthalmic journal. The resident will be required to give presentations at journal clubs and grand rounds.
