Our Vision, Mission and Values

Welcome to University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry

Welcome to the University of Missouri–St. Louis College of Optometry!

It is my honor to lead a college that is deeply committed to advancing the science, practice, and accessibility of eye care. At UMSL College of Optometry, we believe optometric education is not only about mastering clinical skills, it’s about shaping compassionate, forward-thinking professionals who will transform lives and communities.

Our story began in 1977, when a House Bill was passed to establish an optometry college in Missouri. On May 12, 1980, the governor signed the bill into law, and the College officially opened its doors on June 1, 1980. That fall, we welcomed our first class of 36 students to Marillac Hall. Since then, we’ve proudly graduated over 1,665 students with Doctor of Optometry degrees or advanced graduate degrees in Physiological Optics and Vision Science.

Our alumni are making an impact across the glob, from Cameroon to Australia, Canada, and throughout the United States, including service through our military. Today, they reside in 42 states and continue to elevate the profession through leadership, innovation, and service.

As a smaller optometry program, we embrace the advantages of close-knit class sizes, typically around 45 students, which fosters a spirit of collaboration, collegiality, and personalized learning. Our students benefit from a rigorous curriculum, hands-on clinical experiences, and a culture of interdisciplinary engagement. Whether in our on-campus clinics or through clinics serving underserved communities, our students and faculty are making a meaningful difference every day.

The mission of the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry is to promote and provide improved eye and health care across the country by preparing the next generation of optometrists and vision researchers. Our faculty, staff, and students pursue excellence in education, residency training, and patient care with dedication and purpose.

I invite you to explore our college, connect with our community, and consider joining us in shaping the future of eye care.

Sincerely,
